How does your organisation contribute to preventing suicide and supporting those affected by it?
We are a fully accredited security and risk management company, having gained an excellent reputation in the UK market. Our major clients include the likes of Transport for London and Network Rail. Recent conversations with clients about some of their specific security needs, and the suicide prevention challenges some of them face, have led us to explore how we can offer more.
As a company who predominantly offers employment to former serving personnel (male and female), mental health issues or PTSD are never far away within our network. As veterans we already understand that it can be important to advise an individual to find someone who will listen without judging when they want to talk, or just ‘be there’ when they don’t.
What are your current priorities?
To provide a safe working environment for all of the Black Onyx Staff.
As well as a visual, proactive deterrent, we want to work in partnership with with organisations such as Samaritans and the National Suicide Prevention Alliance, to have each Black Onyx Consultant participate in suicide prevention training as a mandatory factor before employment.
As a member of the Armed forces covenant, one of our aims is to de-stigmatise mental health and suicide and encourage vulnerable people to seek help. Something of which we are rather proud.
What challenges are you currently facing?
Major problems include abuse of authority, dishonest or poor business practice, nonreporting of crimes, and lack of public complaint channels.
