Our work in suicide prevention

We are available to listen in the busy shopping area in Bristol in the daytime. We are also available in the built-up areas for nightlife in the evening, providing immediate face to face support in listening, signposting and advocacy, in the hopes of preventing a person from potentially taking otherwise devastating action.

At Hope Against Suicide, we’re dedicated to suicide prevention through community outreach, awareness, and support. By mobilising local volunteers to be available for individuals, to engage in open conversations about mental health and access the help they need.

Our trained street outreach teams, known as Mental Health Responders, are on the ground offering mental health support to those at risk. Our work is focused on achieving three core aims: getting the community talking, improving mental health in the community, and preventing suicide.

Our motivation for joining the NSPA

Hope Against Suicide joined the National Suicide Prevention Alliance (NSPA) to collaborate with other organisations focused on reducing suicide rates. By being part of a national network we aim to share resources, adopt best practices, and strengthen our community-based outreach, to better support those in need and raise awareness about mental health. This partnership enhances their mission of creating safer spaces and preventing suicide on a larger scale.

Our areas of expertise

Hope Against Suicide trains and coordinates volunteers who actively engage with the community to provide mental health support. All volunteers are certified mental health first aiders and suicide first aiders. This ensures that they are equipped to offer compassionate, immediate assistance to individuals in crisis, creating a supportive environment for those in need of help.
