Rural Action Derbyshire

Rural Action Derbyshire’s aim is to ensure the wellbeing of the people who live and work in rural Derbyshire and ensure that they are not unduly disadvantaged. One focus of our work is suicide awareness training (SAT). Our original interest in this field of work stems from the higher risk of suicide experienced by agricultural workers.

Our work in suicide prevention

Rural Action Derbyshire (RAD) has delivered bespoke Suicide Awareness Training (SAT) across Derbyshire since 2009, aiming to promote emotional wellbeing, reduce the stigma around suicide, and foster community resilience by encouraging open conversations.

SAT operates on the belief that suicides are preventable, suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems, and everyone has the potential to help prevent it. The training seeks to reduce the suicide rate in Derbyshire, boost confidence and knowledge among frontline workers and volunteers, and enhance awareness of available support systems.

By addressing mental health stigma and promoting openness, SAT contributes to a stronger, more supportive community. Delegates from various sectors, including voluntary, public, and private organisations, have participated in these seminars.

Our current priorities

To widen the reach of our training by encouraging people in organisations who can support the suicide prevention agenda to attend our training, particularly in those organisations who have not attended before or only infrequently.

Our current challenges

We currently reach a very wide audience for our training, but we want to widen this further.
