Speak Their Name
Speak Their Name offers families and friends the chance to create personalised memorial pages for their loved ones, allowing them to share images, words, and videos to honour the unique lives of those who died by suicide. Our purpose is to help ease the loneliness often felt by those bereaved by suicide, raise awareness about the increased suicide risk in this community, and provide pathways to accessible support.

Our work in suicide prevention
At Speak Their Name, we primarily invite bereaved families and friends of people who died by suicide to build personalised memorial pages for the person they have loved and lost on our web site. We do this acknowledging that a person who has died by suicide is not defined by their death. All the representative ‘squares’ are presented in the form of a digital quilt; and each square links to a memorial page. These deeply moving creations celebrate an individual life that was rich with warmth, love, and people who cared for them.
Our website evolved from ‘Quilt Groups’ – gatherings of people who stitch, sew and crochet in memory of someone they have lost to suicide. There are eight active groups of varying sizes in the UK so far. This is expected to double by the end of 2025. These are mostly in-person groups that we are looking to support and grow, encouraging inclusive activities that generate hope-giving connections within and between the groups. They are open to individuals of all ethnicities, religions, and backgrounds, with the sole common factor being bereavement by suicide. Through this engagement, group members actively spread awareness and learning about suicide, aiming to drive down its prevalence.
We work with other organisations that have similar networks. We are reaching out to Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide, in particular, to expand availability and access to groups across the UK without necessarily duplicating resource that is already in place. We cascade best practice across our networks, making connections between teams where this will improve services available to people bereaved by suicide.

Our motivation for joining the NSPA
We are instinctively collaborative. The NSPA brings together all of the many organisations that are working to bring down the suicide rate across the UK, to help those with suicidal ideation, to support those bereaved by suicide, and to eradicate the stigma associated with suicide. It’s a huge, life-saving task. We want to contribute to that effort.

Our areas of expertise
Our leaders have either lived experience of suicide loss, or significant experience of working with and supporting people who have been bereaved by suicide. Through increasingly comprehensive resources, personal stories, and community-building initiatives, we provide hope, support, and education to those in need.
