How does your organisation contribute to preventing suicide and supporting those affected by it?

The Mall Luton is a large town centre shopping centre. As a company we recognise the devastating impact of suicide for both individuals and communities and the important role we can play in supporting a wider community-based approach to suicide prevention. We understand that suicide is not inevitable, it is preventable, and our vision is that no one attempts to take their life in our centre. We will work and collaborate with partners. We will improve the collation, analysis and sharing of data to ensure we deliver more effective and inclusive suicide prevention plans. We will ensure we fulfil our duty of care to staff, customers and those in the wider community affected by suicide. We will continue to work to de-stigmatise mental health and suicide and encourage vulnerable people to seek help.

What are your current priorities?

Collaborate with local stakeholders in order to reduce suicide and attempted suicides in the area

In order to not just move the issue from our shopping centre we need to build upon the work already done with local stakeholders. Share intelligence, knowledge and training in order to reduce incidences.

Training for team members

Identify and carry out appropriate training to front end members of the team to identify and engage with people that are showing signs of distress or mental health.

Identify best practise

Through the above identify a list of actions and activities that other shopping centres can consider and implement if required.

• We currently have challenges in the design of our building and will work to develop preventative measures.

• Develop preventative measures – we plan to erect new fencing and display Samaritans signage to encourage help seeking.
