LGBTQ+ bereavement by suicide

The Support After Suicide Partnership commissioned Crossland and Jones to research the experiences of LGBTQ+ people affected by suicide. This report presents their findings.

This research is vital as both those affected by suicide and those who identify as LGBTQ+ are at higher risk of suicide.

The study involved 20 participants from diverse backgrounds and identities. It highlighted experiences of discrimination, exclusion, isolation, guilt, shame, and inadequate support from primary care, bereavement services, and the coroner’s court. Participants stressed the importance of peer support, LGBTQ+-specific services, and community-led responses to bereavement.
