Visiting your GP: A guide for young people with lived experience of self-harm or suicidality

This guide is designed to help young people take the first steps toward getting support during a mental health crisis. Developed by researchers at the University of Birmingham in collaboration with the Youth Advisory Group at the University’s Institute for Mental Health, it provides practical advice on:

  • Tips on what to consider before visiting your GPm such as preparing questions, booking an appointment, and bringing someone to support you
  • nformation about your rights regarding confidentiality, questions your doctor might ask, and discussing topics like medication, therapy, or referrals to mental health services.
  • Guidance on accessing professional support and resources, using a ‘safety plan,’ getting help from family and friends, and steps to take if you’re dissatisfied with the consultation.
